Christophe Martin
Chris Martin is a Chartered UK and European Patent Attorney at Marks & Clerk, specialising in the protection and commercialisation of innovation across the electronics sector. He works with companies ranging from start-ups to multinational technology businesses, advising on patents, registered designs and wider intellectual property strategies for technologies including electronic systems, semiconductor devices, integrated circuits, embedded technologies, medical electronics, robotics and energy-related innovations.
Drawing on a deep engineering background, Chris helps clients secure protection for innovations spanning hardware architectures, PCB and electronic system designs, semiconductor fabrication processes, embedded algorithms and connected devices. He also advises on freedom-to-operate assessments, IP due diligence and strategic portfolio development, helping organisations mitigate risk while maximising the value of their R&D investments.
Chris holds an MEng in Electronic and Electrical Engineering and a PhD in Electronics and Nanoscale Engineering from the University of Glasgow. His doctoral research focused on implantable biodegradable electronics for nerve repair, encompassing circuit design, semiconductor fabrication and device integration. He also completed industrial placements at Texas Instruments, contributing to the development of power management integrated circuits. Prior to joining the patent profession, Chris worked as a Research Associate developing advanced biosensor technologies, combining electronic circuit design with semiconductor device fabrication. This experience enables him to bridge the gap between complex engineering challenges and effective intellectual property protection, providing practical insight into how electronics companies can safeguard innovation and maintain a competitive advantage.
