Relec Electronics gets into gear for the Tunbridge Wells Soapbox Race

Relec sponsors the ‘whacky races’ event this month –encouraging engineering skills while supporting some worthy causes
The Tunbridge Wells Soapbox Stars Race (Saturday 25 June 2022) returns to Dunorlan Park for a madcap, exhilarating family fun day. The soapbox kart race which has raised over £50,000 for charities since 2018. This year’s event is even bigger, better and more exhilarating than before.
Relec Electronics is proud to be a sponsor, providing shirts and helmets for the racers as well as engineering and pimping up its own soapbox kart “Staff Wars” to take on all competitors.
This year, the Tunbridge Wells Soapbox race will include a schools race in partnership with the West Kent ISSP (Independent State School Partnership) with seven local schools fielding teams racing karts built at the schools.
Organisers provide 30 basic karts and it is the entrants’ job to ‘pimp that ride’, and then raceon the specially-made, downhill race track in Dunorlan Park. The zany time trials raise money and laughs and decide the Grand Finalists for the race at the end of the afternoon. All of this organised mayhem happens to the commentary of the TW Soapbox Stars Race’s special guest celebrities, TV chef, Rosemary Shrager and theatre producer, Tom Swift.
Relec Electronics is an advocate of bringing engineering to young students and this event is a perfect way to explore and discover engineering design skills while raising money for amazing charities.
“We have supported the TW Soapbox Stars Race in previous years and are particularly pleased to see schools taking part this year. Encouraging students to get involved in a project like this is invaluable hands-on experience for the next generation of engineers,” said John Stone, director of sales at Relec Electronics.
“Relec has always supported students, from providing samples for projects to offering technical or careers advice,” he added. “This is another practical way that we can support the next generation of engineers and raise money for charities. The Relec soapbox kart to look out for in the 2022 race is “Staff Wars” and it is raising money for CRY -Cardiac Risk in the Young -a charity which works to prevent young, sudden cardiac deaths through awareness, screening and research and supporting affected families.
“Teams are from a range of businesses, organisations as well as individuals, all coming together to raise money for some amazing causes,” said Nicole Piesse Turner, founder of Chatty Hatter, and organiser of TW Soapbox Stars Race. “As well as working together to create the best, the wackiest soapbox kart they can, all the racers and spectators have great fun cheering on friends, family, business associates – and rivals. It is a riotous day that is great fun and raises a lot of moneyfor worthy causes.”
In 2022 the chosen charities for the TW Soapbox Stars are Hospice in the Weald, Nourish Community Foodbank in Tunbridge Wells and the Pickering Cancer Drop-In Centre.
